When your talking solid lifter camshafts there were. Because they're ground differently, a solid-lifter cam must use solid lifters and a hydraulic cam must use hydraulic lifters. Small blocks with more power with more than 350 hp had close to 11.00 to 1 compression and solid lifers. Also, you can't mix and match cams and lifters. Either type of roller cam and lifter is considerably more expensive than a flat tappet. Hydraulic rollers are becoming much more common but haven't found much of a following in high-performance circles yet, except in late-model computer-controlled cars. Most roller lifters aren't of the hydraulic type, so they require adjustment just like a solid lifter. A roller cam is normally associated with hard-core race engines, but several companies make street rollers that are docile enough for a daily driver, yet still make serious power. Hydraulic and solid, nonroller cams are also called 'flat-tappet' cams. A solid-lifter cam is beneficial in high-rpm applications (6500 rpm and higher), but it requires a lash adjustment every few months. If you're not more ET/Timeslip oriented the 280 cam can also work with 3.55 gears and a 4spd on the street.TYPE OF LIFTER: A hydraulic-lifter cam is the best choice if the car is to be a daily driver, because it doesn't need periodic lash adjustments. The 270 being a decent do it all street cam and the 280 a do it all street cam with a sacrifice of streetability= less lower rpm torque and vacuum for more upper rpm power. Both of those should be cast into the shaft itself between the bearing journals somewhere, but I can't exactly remember the location. The 350 cam has a casting number 3694962 and the 327 cam has 3863152. 'In a 350' it's really the first step in cams that shifts the power closer to the upper rpm's. Duration and overlap differ between the cams. If you have 9.75+ compression (not likely unless you have flat top pistons and the 67-68cc heads) you could go with more cam like the 280 Magnum but even with 202/160 valves it really likes a mild amount of head porting to help it breath. As long as you have around 9.5-9.75 compression then something like the Comp Cams 270 Magnum would work well with those heads, 355 gears and the 4spd. If you're looking for something as simple as the 350HP cam then I suggest an older design aftermarket cam because they are easier on the valvetrain.
